A friend of mine has his friends send him lists of their favourite albums each year; this year I decided to embroider mine by hand.

Pin-Pricks and Poplar Fuzz March 24, 2009

I was telling a friend about my day so far, and he gave me my title for today’s post as my theme for the day.  Today I went for an appointment with an allergist.

I have long suspected that I’m allergic to walnuts and pecans because they make my mouth feel funny.  And within the last two weeks I have had a couple reactions to some mysterious allergen, so I figured it was time to see what I am allergic to.

Turns out that although I’ve never felt funny after donating blood, I’m easily made faint by getting allergy tests because I nearly passed out after getting three batteries of prick tests and one of needle tests.  I am not allergic to cats, dogs, walnuts, pecans, horses nor pineapples, nor am I allergic to trees.  I am however mildly allergic to house dust and outdoor moulds like snow mould and tree moulds.  I told my buddy I was glad I wasn’t allergic to trees because I have intentions of collecting poplar fluff and trying to spin it.

Oh, and the thing that caused the reactions?  Bloodworms.  I feed frozen bloodworms to my aquatic frog in my office, and it seems I should be doing that wearing gloves because it makes me react with itchy eyes, snotty nose and sometimes tight throat.

Celebration Day! March 21, 2009

I’m just at work charging my cell phone for half an hour because I forgot my charger here.  I’m on my way to visit my mom at the shop she manages until 6:00 tonight.  That’s right, my mom is finally retiring.  Sort of.  She still has three weeks of vacation time, but she doesn’t have to put any more time in after tonight.  Hooray!  So I’m going to surprise her for a lunch visit with her best friend.

Then tomorrow, I think Dad and I are going fishing.

Moonlight March 16, 2009

So I purchased the complete series (a.k.a. first and only season) of Moonlight and watched it while I worked on my Aeolian Shoulderette (ravelry link). I understand why this show only survived one season; the lead is not the best actor (which I often argue may be the director’s fault, but there were some pretty bad over-acting reactions), although he’s really not hard to look at…but I wonder if anyone else thought it was interesting that the dude was a Private Investigator, and years and years ago there was a P.I. show called Moonlighting (with Bruce Willis, Cybill Shepherd and no vampires…that I remember).  Am I sad that I bought Moonlight rather than rented it?  No, because I like the fromage and will watch it again.  Often.

I also watched Big Trouble in Little China, The Dark Crystal, Saved, The Lucky Ones, and the last two discs of the first season of Veronica Mars while I worked on my wee shawl as I was so sick this weekend, I was going nowhere.  I had the nastiest sore throat; it even hurt to touch my neck where you could see the glands had swelled.

I have been wondering if I would have gotten as much done on the shoulderette if I had been healthier; I wouldn’t have been home as much, but I may have had my brain more involved and made fewer mistakes.  Ah well, it’s still going to look great when it’s blocked.  Here it is so far:

I’m using my Dandelion Knits Handpaint Alpaca Merino Lace (Ravelry Link), glass with silver-holed “Blue Moon Beads” and the recommended 3.75 mm needles.

I may have a million projects on the go, but I don’t care, I’m casting this on with the Dandelion Knits laceweight I mentioned in the last post.  The new Knitty is up.

Yarn March 6, 2009

I’ve been busy lately, and I don’t know what’s up but even when I have free time I haven’t been posting.  Nor really taking photos…I blame winter and the propensity towards SAD.

Anyway, here are some yarn photos.

These yarns are dyed by my friend at Ewe Asked For It.  I am always on the lookout for non Superwash yarns, and she started dyeing some.  Of course, I don’t have the specs with me so I’ll have to edit this post, but they’re yummy.

This one is a sock yarn.

This one is laceweight.

And these yarns, 277 yards of the blue, less than 10 of the grey, are handspun by me and winging their way to a classmate in Montana.  The grey is to show the original colour, the blue is the colour it turned after being dyed in indigo.  I love dyeing with indigo!  I think it’s so cool that the yarn doesn’t change colour in the dyebath but when you pull it out and it meets air, the dyestuffs oxidize and that’s when the colour shows up.  Awesome.
