Sewing, Knitting and Smithing…sort of…

Cool Site September 28, 2007

Filed under: Links — dellybean @ 5:33 pm

For those of you who have submitted patterns to various people who you submit patterns for, and got denied, there’s a really nifty little site that will take ‘em.  And if you’re looking for patterns and are not pleased with the places you normally check out, it’s good for you too.

Go hang out at the Island of Misfit Patterns.  The lady who runs it is a knitter of Drunken Bees socks too!  She found me on Ravelry!

I’m Not a Tailor September 27, 2007

I’m kind of enjoying building this jacket…although…I’m not a tailor, and I definitely will need some bustle therapy after this.

Full view of the inside of the jacket.

Close up of the lapel and all of the pad stitching I had to do on it.  I’m still doing some hand stitching on this, and it’s only the first one…Jackets could be an okay thing but I don’t need a book to tell me how to build a dress…

However, it’s not all about work.  There’s more knitting.

A Dreamswatch Head Wrap (but it’s going to be a scarf for me…I don’t do the head wrap) by Knit and Tonic.  Out of the same yarn and colourway used in the original, which is funny because I forgot what the recommended yarn was when I decided to knit this project with this yarn.  Teehee.

And it’s not all about knitting either…

I made a “Syd” from Stupid Sock Creatures for my friend M who is leaving for Ontario/Quebec within a week.  Ya…maybe I got too much going on…But the pumpkins are Lil Rose Thorn’s creations, so I’m not the only one.

Thwarted! September 26, 2007

I thought the moon, especially when full, was supposed to be friends to people who are artistically inclined?  Why, then, were L and I both unsuccessful in our projects at silversmithing class tonight?!?

It almost made me want to find a shot of tequila.

I always think I have no social life, but I’m out almost every night these days.  Not a lot of time to craft.  Though…

The large brown (with purple undertones) item is the front and back of the mock-cable Burtley sweater, completely off the needles.  Now I need to start on the sleeves.  But they’re of the pick up and knit variety so the sweater is on pause.  I have other more delightful things taking my attention.

The sock toe is Kaylee by Monkey Toes.   I found it on Ravelry which is my new favourite toy.  I needed a project that I could travel with.  The other option is Sahara, but it’s a non-plied silk that I don’t want to get shredded in my bag because I’m lugging it around everywhere.  So socks it is, and this pattern is so cute…except it’s showing toe-cleavage, and that is something I loathe…but maybe I can handle it in a sock…

And that bit of teal is the back shoulder of Sahara.  Isn’t it a beautiful piece of fabric?

I apologise for the quality of the photo, but I’m subject to the whim of being north-ish and not a lot of light gets into my East-facing apartment before 9 a.m.

As for the suit jacket, I have the pockets in the fronts and am onto the pad stitching on the lapel of the right front.  Oh…hand stitching…I’ll show you the completed piece eventually.

Another craft.  I’m starting a scarf for my mom for Christmas.  The horizontal golds and green will be removed for fringe (they were just practise, it is my first woven piece.  I’m doing the weft in a twill arrowhead pattern.  I’m excited.

But…my Tilli Tomas yarn arrived and all I want to do right now is work on that.

And wish me luck; I’m going to start building my first real suit jacket today.  And I’m not a tailor, that’s a whole other art-form, but everyone thinks I can do it…

Sewing with Rayon, Knitting with Wire, and strange happenings… September 20, 2007

Here’s a 1920s dress I made for work out of paneled fabric:

Here’s the ring I knit in silversmthing last night.  I had ideas for projects but needed to do more research, but I had wire and I had knitting needles in my bag, so I knitted a little swatch and then wrapped the ends together to make this ring.  And then my instructor helped me start my latest weaving project, the first one I’m going to do with a real loom (not that the inkle isn’t real…).

And I just saw this.  A week after I had watched Night of the Living Dead.  And days after I bought one of these

I don’t love autumn… September 16, 2007

I’m just a little sad.

But I saw these on my way to my car this morning to head to work:

And they brightened my day a little.

Hopefully these things will pick me up: I’m getting new glasses that are really fun.  And the Tilli Thomas yarns (Pure and Simple and Disco Lights in teal) are on their way to me from kpixie.  And I just ordered a really fantastic shirt that says, “Sometimes I worry about Zombies.”  And I’m getting the second and third seasons of Grey’s Anatomy (so I can finally see the last three episodes of the third season….hhhhh…) on DVD.  Things will pick up.

But I wish I could have Spring back right now.

Oh Yeah… September 14, 2007

I forgot, there were other things I knitted on while on vacation.

I kind of designed a mittenette. I have a book that has a collection of stitches, and I can’t seem to find it now that I’ve mostly been home for a week…silly-head…and I used one of the stitches in it and Colinette Jitterbug to make ambidextrous mitt. And no, the ends aren’t woven in yet and the crazy lump is my watch that I almost never take off…

I also knit on a sweater for work. I’m not going to bother posting pictures until it’s finished, but believe me, it’s going to be stellar. I may have mentioned it before. It’s a vintage 1920s pattern called the Burtley Sweater. I’m knitting most of it with Galway Highland Heathers #700. It’s knit from the bottom of the back, over the shoulders and down to the hems of the fronts. I had already finished the front armhole shaping and did 4 or 5 pattern repeats on the fronts (I’m doing them simultaneously, and it totally makes sense to do it that way or you’d have to figure out some crazy chart work) while I was on the trip. I have 8 more repeats and the fronts are done…then onto the sleeves…and finally the collar in Camelia in sort of a camel colour.

And if you were wondering, the dishcloth was knit in a tweed stitch.

I’m a Joiner…And Maybe You Should be Too? September 13, 2007

I joined this. But I don’t know how to add buttons to my sidebar in the free version of WP, so the button stays here and doesn’t link to anything. There will be a link on my sidebar though. *

Also, I know you probably know, but Just In Case, the new Knitty is up. I like the Woodins because of their tails (I waffled until I saw the tails), I adore Roam, Muir is lovely, and Percy is quite nifty. I haven’t read any of the articles yet; I’m sleepy.

* Thanks to Donyale’s very handy comment, I have a button that links to the website in my sidebar!  Thanks so much!
