Sewing, Knitting and Smithing…sort of…

Nifty! August 30, 2007

So I was playing with silver last night, and my teacher gave me something wonderful.  She didn’t really want to give it to me because she thinks that it’s too primitive, but I like it, and I think my dad can do a few modifications on it…

My “new” loom.

Yay!

And the weirdness continues August 28, 2007

I have the weirdest things happen to me.  Like…I have a second hand vacuum, and as I was cleaning house this evening…the plastic handle snapped.  I repaired it with retired knitting needles and duct tape and it snapped again!  So, now I have a weak, but awesome, vacuum handle.  It’s hot baby!

z’buhh? August 28, 2007

Translation: WTF? but nicer.  This is how a search ended up in my blog:

“see me in my ff nylons”

Again, z’buhh?

I missed the lunar eclipse last night.  I’ve been suffering from swollen throat glands and had to stay up past midnight last night…there was no waking up to look at the moon between 4 and 5 this morning.  Sadness, because that’s cool.

Weary August 27, 2007

So I’ve been under the weather…really great for when I’m days away from my vacation, but hopefully it will all work out. Meanwhile, I don’t really have time to be sick, there’s too much to do these days…

Today I had another “I love my job” day. I got to check out some artifacts. I found some wonderful things including spinning wheels, dresses, and sewing and knitting patterns and notions. There was an AWESOME find in a 1922 late summer Butterick pattern catalogue. I had to sit down on the floor and cradle it in my lap because I was just too excited to stand any more. The thing is HUGE!

Here’s a detail of a sleeve of one of the dresses we saw:

Posting may be sporadic this week, and definitely for the first half of the month. I’ll try to post again before I leave. But one more thing I have to share…I just got notice that Crime and Punishment is waiting for me at the library! Holy vacation reading Batman! Wish me luck.

Rather, beetle.

Because I haven’t had time to do anything crafty in my latest evenings (aside from head to the craft store…oh, and I suppose I spun at the yarn store today but I didn’t take photos…).

I saw this guy after a brief trip on a York boat (I love my job).

Pleased with myself… August 22, 2007

I still have some Lantern Festival wool to finish spinning, but I had to take this to work to give to my friend, and while I had some daylight I took some photos and this one fills my heart with joy for some reason and I had to share.

That is all.

Socktastic! August 22, 2007

I got my socks in the mail. Yup, my Sockapalooza socks from Knitalie! They are beautiful and cooshy “Simply Lovely Lace Socks” from the Spring 2006 Interweave Knits (hey, there was an imperfect rhyme! I haven’t mentioned that I’ve been hyper for the last four days, have I?) created with Fleece Artist Merino Sock yarn in the “Brick” colourway. And along for the ride was a bottle of Eucalan to maintain the cooshiness, and a wee felted pouch for which I’m still contemplating uses…stitch markers mayhaps? I think yes.

I am the spoiled. Thanks SO MUCH KNITALIE!

My short term memory blows. August 22, 2007

I meant to tell you that this morning I checked my hotmail and discovered an e-mail from iTunes that advertised the latest releases, and the free song of the week was by a band called Tricot MachineKnit Machine!  You can hear the song on their site.  The song was L’ours.

Ooh, I got mail! August 22, 2007

Except, I can’t really show you in a way that will do it justice; being somewhat North, the days have already started getting shorter, and it’s been cloudy and cool in the mornings, so the photo taking has to happen later in the day already.  And, though it has nothing to do with photo taking, I just need to point out that the trees are starting to turn yellow.  Shudder.

So expect a giftie post soon.

In the meantime, let me distract you with something pretty from the day job:

1920s-silk-blouse.jpg

1920s blouse in washable silk (totally appropriate for the 1920s by the way; I have a vintage magazine advertising Ivory washing flakes warning you not to leave your silk blouses in the hamper with the rest of the clothes because it will damage the delicate fibre).  This blouse didn’t really play well with others; it was supposed to have a tie/collar but I didn’t have enough fabric to do that and have the hip tie, and when I tried to do a Peter Pan collar, it just would not lie properly (the underside rolled to the upper side).  It doesn’t happen a lot, but sometimes the garment forces me to do what it wants rather than lets me force it to do what I want.  This is one of the times the garment was right.

Decisions, decisions… August 21, 2007

sahara-pattern-smudge-small.jpg

So, I bought the Sahara pattern by Stitch Diva Studios through kpixie the other day, and yesterday I discovered it had been slid under my door. Huzzah!

Now…do I splurge, since it’s a pattern I can’t use for the store, and buy the Tilli Tomas yarns to go with it? Or do I be frugal and buy yarn I can afford?  I’m planning on doing the short-sleeved version.

Such a conundrum. I suppose I should wait until I return from the road-trip…
